{"id":11374,"date":"2020-06-04T18:06:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T18:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/67.227.193.156\/~sterlingbob29846\/?p=11374"},"modified":"2023-05-02T18:36:32","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T18:36:32","slug":"safely-restarting-machinery-thats-been-idled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testoil.com\/press-releases\/safely-restarting-machinery-thats-been-idled\/","title":{"rendered":"Safely Restarting Machinery     That\u2019s Been Idled"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CLEVELAND,\n&nbsp;June 3, 2020 <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.stage.testoil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>TestOil<\/strong><\/a>, the industry\nleader in lubricant analysis, has the expertise on staff to help customers\nsafely recommission machinery that has been idled due to the COVID-19 shutdown.\nAlthough it\u2019s tempting to just flip the switch, TestOil recommends due\ndiligence before restarting; beginning with a visual inspection to check for\nrust, leaking gaskets, seals, cracks, proper oil levels, oil color, etc.<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The next step is to\nconsider the variables that may have affected the condition of idled equipment.\nThese include:<br>\n\u2022 Type of Equipment: If some equipment, for example rotating machinery, sits\nidle in one position for an unusually long period of time several issues can\narise, such as noise and vibration that will be apparent at start-up. False\nbrinelling of bearings can occur in the areas that experience vibration and\nshafts can bow if left in one position for an extended period.<br>\n\u2022 Proper\/Improper Shutdown: At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost no\none was prepared for the severity and length of the situation. However, for\nmachinery that was properly shut down, the path to recommissioning will be\nsmoother.<br>\n\u2022 Condition of the Equipment before Shutdown: The age and the number of\noperating hours on a piece of machinery will have a bearing on how well it\nfares during shutdown. If it was placed in service fairly recently, it should\nbounce back with few issues (the OEM will be an excellent source of recommissioning\nadvice). On the other hand, if it is out-of-warranty or close to end-of-life,\nthis may be a good time to think about replacing it or at least securing a\nbackup\u2014depending on how critical the machine is to operations.<br>\n\u2022 Operating Environment: Further complicating the situation, the onset of the\nCOVID-19 shutdown occurred during a period of seasonal change in most parts of\nthe U.S. As facilities shut down, most either increased or decreased the\ninterior temperature to save on energy bills. These temperature fluctuations\nand associated condensation can affect the state of idled machinery.<br>\n\u2022 Length of Shutdown: The longer machinery sits idle, the more susceptible it\nis to contamination, corrosion, the ingress\/egress of fluids and in the extreme\ninsects and rodents. This is particularly true if the equipment operates or was\nstored outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depending\non the extent of these variables and whether there are obvious issues, TestOil\nmay recommend testing the oil before restarting--although it\u2019s usually best to\nsample the oil while the machinery is in operation.<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; TestOil Data Analyst Frank\nRex said, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to hit \u2018go\u2019 and put it into service right away.
