These include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\ntype of equipment<\/li><li>How\nit was decommissioned<\/li><li>The\ncondition of the equipment prior to shutdown<\/li><li>The\noperating environment<\/li><li>The\nlength of the shutdown<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TestOil Data\nAnalyst Frank Rex explained, \u201cMost of it involves environmental conditions and\nthe condition of the equipment when it was idled. The type of equipment also matters.&nbsp; The biggest issue is protecting it from water\nand corrosion--the degree of which depends on the type of equipment and the length\nof inactivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Type of Equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If some equipment,\nfor example rotating machinery, sits idle in one position for an unusually long\nperiod of time several issues can arise that will be apparent (noise and\nvibration) at start-up.&nbsp;&nbsp; False brinelling\nof bearings can occur in the areas that experience vibration and shafts can bow\nif left in one position for an extended period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proper\/Improper Shutdown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, equipment at many\nbusinesses was not properly shut down. And that is completely understandable.\nMany were not prepared for the severity and length of the situation.&nbsp; And if they were, they had a lot of other\nthings on their mind, such as caring for employees and paying bills. Proper\nmachinery shutdown just wasn\u2019t a priority. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Condition of the Equipment before Shutdown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The age and the number of operating hours on a piece of\nmachinery will have a bearing on how well it fares during shutdown. If it was placed\nin service fairly recently, it should bounce back with few issues (the OEM will\nbe an excellent source of recommissioning advice). On the other hand, if it is\nout-of-warranty or close to end-of-life, this may be a good time to think about\nreplacing it or at least securing a backup\u2014depending on how critical the\nmachine is to operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Operating Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further complicating the situation, the onset of the COVID-19\nshutdown occurred during a period of seasonal change in most parts of the U.S.\nAs facilities shut down, most either increased or decreased the interior\ntemperature to save on energy bills. Once they reopened, they reverted back to\nnormal operating temperatures. These temperature fluctuations and associated\ncondensation can affect the state of machinery when it is restarted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; TestOil\nField\/Data Analyst Matt McMahon gave the following example; \u201cWe have a customer\nwith machines that were in a basement that was very hot during normal working\nconditions\u2014110-120 degrees. They were shut down for only a week and it got down\nto 70 degrees. Then they had an extended shutdown and it got down to 50\ndegrees. That temperature variable can make a difference\u2014especially as it affects\nviscosity upon cold start-up.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Length of Shutdown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On one hand, a cold start is a cold start.&nbsp; On the other hand, starting a machine that\nhas been idle for several months\u2014as in the current situation--can be another\nmatter. The longer it sits idle, the more susceptible it is to contamination,\ncorrosion, the ingress\/egress of fluids and in the extreme insects and\nrodents.&nbsp; This is particularly true if\nthe equipment operates or was stored outside. The bottom line is that failing to\nfollow the required inspections and testing processes prior to restarting equipment\ncan imperil the machinery and create a hazard for workers. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As preparations are underway to restart operations, there are many variables that affect the current condition of idled equipment.
