A good start is a visual inspection\nto check for rust, leaking gaskets, seals, cracks, proper oil levels and oil\ncolor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cIf they did take steps to\nprepare the equipment before they idled it, they should reverse those steps,\u201d\nFrank said. \u201cIf no steps were taken to control moisture contamination, the\nequipment should be inspected for rust and corrosion.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He continued, \u201cSurfaces will be\ndry and should be lubricated thoroughly prior to start up. If there is water\ncontamination, the system should be flushed if possible. Inspect the equipment\nfirst--especially any hydraulic and lubrication systems--drain any water off\nand grab a representative sample of the oil to see if it has degraded. Ideally,\nthough, in order to get a representative sample, the oil should be moving\nthrough the equipment.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific\ntests Frank recommends include Karl Fischer (for water), acid number and\nadditive levels. \u201cIn most cases, they wouldn\u2019t need to\ncompletely change the oil before start up,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Although most machinery isn\u2019t restarted in isolation,\nfollowing are a few examples of procedures to complete before restarting\nequipment.<a href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>STEAM\nTURBINE <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Confirm\n     nitrogen blanketing inside the lube oil tank is at correct pressure<\/li><li>Confirm\n     barrier gas supply is at correct flow rate<\/li><li>Confirm\n     primary and secondary seal gas\/oil is in the line<\/li><li>Confirm\n     pressure differential control valve bypass valve is open<\/li><li>Drain primary\n     seal filters<\/li><li>Confirm lube\n     oil header pressure and control oil pressure<\/li><li>Confirm level\n     in hot well is 50%<\/li><li>Confirm inlet\n     steam is at proper temperature; emergency stop valve must be closed<\/li><li>Confirm gland\n     steam supply is at adequate flow rate<\/li><li>Open startup\n     valve<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>HYDRAULIC\nSYSTEM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check\n     lubricant level is at desired level<ol type=\"a\"><li>If equipped\n      with piston pump, ensure pump housing is also filled<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Confirm valves\n     open on suction line<\/li><li>Check that\n     pressure control valves, flow control valves and pressure compensators are\n     set to as low a setting as possible, or in last configured setting<\/li><li>Set\n     directional control valves to their at-rest position<\/li><li>Charge the\n     accumulators to their specified pre-charge pressures<\/li><li>Turn on pump<\/li><li>Bleed the\n     system at the load lines, as far as possible, at highest point<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Operate\n      directional control valves and allow the loads to move in and out several\n      times<\/li><li>Increase the\n     load slowly<\/li><li>Increase the\n     setting of the pressure control valves and\/or pressure compensators<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bleeding is\n      complete when no more foam appears in the reservoir, load movements are\n      smooth and no abnormal noises are present<\/li><li>Check\n     lubricant level after bleeding is complete<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>GENERIC\nELECTRIC MOTOR <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If equipped,\n     energize the space heaters<\/li><li>If oil\n     lubricated, check lubricant level is at desired level<ol type=\"a\"><li>If flood or\n      mist application, turn on oil supply pump<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>If grease\n     lubricated, replenish and purge grease<\/li><li>If equipped,\n     turn on cooling water supply<\/li><li>Inspect belts\n     or coupling to ensure they are in good condition<\/li><li>Check to see\n     that machine spins freely<\/li><li>Confirm all\n     guards are in place<\/li><li>Turn on motor<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nmost prevalent failure mode at startup for motors is bearing-related and can\ninclude worn bearings, bear housings or shafts. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to hit \u2018go\u2019 and\nput it into service right away,\u201d Frank said. \u201cStart it up to see if it is\noperating properly first.&nbsp; Many problems\ncan be detected by test-running the equipment and performing vibration analysis\nand\/or ultrasound and infrared thermography.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Matt explained that there are warning signs\nindicating the equipment needs to be shut down again. These include unusual\nnoise and\/or vibration. \u201cHopefully you would catch that right away,\u201d he said.\n\u201cOnce you notice vibration or noise there\u2019s a chance that the damage has\nalready been done. So shut it down right away.\u201d&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If the equipment has been thoroughly\nvetted, started in isolation and does well, operators can be confident that it\nwill perform well once it\u2019s put into production again.&nbsp; <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\nThese are generic examples to demonstrate only\nthe extent of pre-startup procedures.
