Detailed\noil analysis is critical to effectively managing reliability and is sometimes\ncomplemented with technologies such as vibration analysis, ultrasound and\nthermography to maximize the equipment\u2019s life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the oil can be tested\nprior to start up if there are obvious issues, it\u2019s usually better to pull a\nsample when the equipment is operating. And for idled equipment, that first\nanalysis should be conducted as soon as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before sending the sample to the\nlab, be sure that the lab is aware the equipment has been idled and for how\nlong. \u201cOften, we receive samples without\nbackground information,\u201d Matt said. \u201cCustomers don\u2019t always let us know if the\nequipment has been down for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those that have been taking\nadvantage of trending oil analysis, once the lab analyzes the first post\nshutdown sample, they should be able to determine where to restart trending\nanalysis. If that sample is pretty much\nwhere trending left off, they can continue trending without missing a\nbeat. Otherwise the oil may have to be\nreplaced and the trending analysis reset. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTrending will usually not be a problem as long as\nthey didn\u2019t change the oil,\u201d Matt explained. \u201cBut if they changed the oil, we\nneed to know about it. They should try to get back on schedule ASAP and send\nthe sample to us right away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
