This is a critical test\nfor characterizing unexpected solid debris found in a filter or machine. This\ncan help with root cause analysis--what may have caused the debris to be\ndeposited. Determining the root cause of the issue, so that it can be resolved,\ncan reduce costs associated with problem recurrence, such as unexpected\ndowntime, increased filter changes, and shortened oil life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While Filter\nDebris Analysis (another TestOil Service) detects wear metals, Material\nIdentification Analysis detects both organic and non-organic materials. The\nanalysis consists of a full range of analytical and sample preparation\ntechniques to assess the origin of the material and provide recommendations for\nresolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The\nfollowing real life TestOil client examples illustrate the importance of this\nservice.<br>\n\u2022 A wax-based product was being used to coat aluminum parts. The product was\nmelted and held in a tank before being applied to the parts via hoses and\napplicator blades. The applicator blades were frequently developing clogs,\nresulting in uneven coating of the parts. Analysis revealed that the product\nhad been contaminated with calcium carbonate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The suction screen filter of a single-use lubricating system\nwas coated with a black material. TestOil determined that the black material\nwas primarily polypropylene rubber, and that the rubber hose through which the\nlubricant was being pumped was not compatible with the lubricant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 During routine oil analysis, TestOil\u2019s analysts noticed a\ngearbox lubricant sample containing a pink gel-like substance, black\nrubber-like particles, and hard white particles. These foreign contaminants\nwere identified as grease, silicone rubber, and phenoxy resin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 After a tractor had undergone its third hydraulic replacement,\nthe maintenance crew decided to have a sample of odd-colored sludge analyzed.\nTesting was able to determine that the hydraulics had been severely contaminated\nwith fertilizer due to the presence of compounds such as urea, nitrates and\nphosphates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A filter covered in dark brown sludge from an EHC hydraulic\nsystem was clogging frequently. TestOil determined that the dark brown sludge\nwas the result of the phosphate ester fluid severely degrading in the presence\nof water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; TestOil\nPresident Mary Messuti said, \u201cIn all of these instances, the analysis allowed\nthe client to take specific action that resolved the issue. Not every oil\nanalysis lab provides this service because it requires a degree of expertise\nthat most labs just don\u2019t have on staff.
