The Rotating Pressure Vessel Oxidation Test\n(RPVOT) is a time-tested method for determining the oxidation stability of an\noil. It is the most\nwidely used indicator of a fluid\u2019s oxidative resistance. Since it measures the existing<\/em> resistance to oil oxidation rather than the oxidation that\nhas already occurred, it is a predictive test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

RPVOT is most often utilized to estimate the\nfluid\u2019s remaining useful life and can\nalso be used to compare batches of the same oil formulation in different machines.\nOne of the many reasons that RPVOT is so valuable is that it can head\noff oxidation before it has a chance to do some real damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And oxidation does create damage. In fact, it\nis one of the primary causes of lubricant degradation. As the oil oxidizes it\nforms acids and other insoluble products that will eventually form sludge and\/or\nvarnish\u2014coating and compromising everything in its path including bearings and\nhydraulic components to valves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RPVOT is usually performed annually\u2014more\nfrequently as oil ages.  It\u2019s best for large\noil volumes with low makeup fluid requirements that are infused with antioxidant\nadditive packages. This includes steam turbines and any machinery that operates\nin severe conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

RPVOT is conducted by placing a sample of oil\nalong with water and a copper catalyst in a pressure vessel. It is then pressurized\nwith pure oxygen. Antioxidants present in the oil will act to resist oxidation,\nbut once they have been consumed the oil will begin to react with the oxygen\nand the pressure in the vessel will drop. The time it takes to reach the\nspecified drop in pressure is recorded and trended against historical results\nas well as new oil specifications. Results are reported in minutes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legacy Group I\nfluids typically had RPVOT values of about 600 minutes. Group II and III fluids\nwith comprehensive additive packages can have values in excess of 3000 minutes.\nFluids are often alarmed when the RPVOT result is 25% of the new oil\nspecification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
