We can, in some cases, test the additive level and, in other cases, we can look for symptoms of additive depletion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For hydraulic oils, Matt recommends the following tests: \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/routine-testing\/particle-count-technologies-at-testoil\/\">Particle Count<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/services\/oil-analysis\/ftir\/\">FTIR<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.testoil.com\/acton\/fs\/blocks\/showLandingPage\/a\/4748\/p\/p-00b4\/t\/page\/fm\/0?leadsource=blog\">Elemental Spectroscopy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/routine-testing\/what-does-an-acid-number-measure\/\">Acid Number<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/advanced-testing\/the-fundamentals-of-viscosity\/\">Viscosity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/services\/oil-analysis\/karl-fischer-water\/\">Karl Fischer Water<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 While most of today\u2019s hydraulic fluids should have some type of defoamer, there is a limit as to how much air entrainment is too much for even the most robust defoamer. According to Matt, it wouldn\u2019t be unusual for a customer to report seeing foam during operation\u2014i.e. oozing out of the vents in the hydraulic system\u2014necessitating a foam test (ASTM D892). Matt also said that every now and then someone will ask for a varnish\/<a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/services\/oil-analysis\/ruler\/\">RULER<\/a> test for hydraulic fluid\u2014especially if they notice things like sticking valves.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hydraulic systems work under tight tolerances and high pressure. As time goes on, hydraulic fluids are expected provide greater protection under harsher conditions.
