{"id":573,"date":"2012-09-19T08:54:15","date_gmt":"2012-09-19T08:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oil-analysis.testoil.com\/?p=573"},"modified":"2023-05-02T19:07:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T19:07:27","slug":"testing-the-reserve-alkalinity-base-number","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testoil.com\/routine-testing\/testing-the-reserve-alkalinity-base-number\/","title":{"rendered":"Testing the Reserve Alkalinity: Base Number"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"h2\">Testing the Reserve Alkalinity: Base Number<\/h2>\n<p>Base Number (BN) testing is very similar to AN testing, except that the properties are reversed. \u00a0The sample is titrated with an acidic solution to measure the oil\u2019s alkaline reserve. \u00a0ASTM test methods D-2896 or D-4739 are most commonly used to measure BN. \u00a0Measuring the BN can help ensure that the oil is able to protect the component from corrosion due to acid.<\/p>\n<p>Many oils (especially motor oils) are fortified with alkaline additives to neutralize acids that are formed as a result of oil oxidation. \u00a0In diesel engine applications, acid is formed in the combustion chamber when moisture combines with sulfur under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The BN of an oil is highest when the oil is new and decreases with use. \u00a0Once again, condemning limits (limit where the oil is condemned for use and should be replaced) are based on the application. \u00a0As a rule, the BN should not drop below 25 percent of its original value.
