Solid contaminants can act as abrasives causing severe damage to components.\u00a0 Solids can also clog <a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/advanced-testing\/filter-debris-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filters<\/a> and orifices restricting oil flow and resulting in lubricant starvation.\u00a0 Fluid contaminants such as water will alter the load handling ability of an oil, and can act as a catalyst to lubricant degradation.\u00a0 Many fluids also cause internal corrosion and rust.\u00a0 Proper filtration must be maintained, and sources of potential contamination should be identified and controlled to ensure the cleanest lubricant possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incorrect Lubricant Selection<\/strong><br \/>When selecting a lubricant for a given application, both equipment specifications and operating perimeters should be taken into account.\u00a0 Most importantly, the proper grade (<a href=\"https:\/\/testoil.com\/advanced-testing\/the-fundamentals-of-viscosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viscosity<\/a>) lubricant must be chosen.\u00a0 Secondly, the lubricant should have the proper additive package.\u00a0 Other considerations include the type of base oil, demusibility, and extreme temperature characteristics.\u00a0 Once the proper lube is selected, procedures should be put in place to ensure the selected lubricant is applied at the proper intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Although the lubricants may be deemed equivalent or comparable, that does not mean they are compatible.
